Darin R. Haivala, MD

 

Dr. Haivala is a board-certified Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, originally from Spearfish, SD.  He received his M.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1998.  He completed his Ophthalmolgy Residency and subsequent Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the Dean McGee Eye Institue in 2004.  Following fellowship, he remained on staff at Dean McGee until 2010, when he joined Dr. Lawrence at Retinal Associates of Oklahoma.

 

While at Dean Mcgee, he was involved in numerous clinical trials, including pivitol trials resulting in the approval of Lucentis and Eylea.

 

Dr. Haivala is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists.   He is on staff at Summit Medical Center, Oklahoma Surgicare, and OU Health Sciences Center.

 

Outside of medicine, Dr. Haivala is an avid snowboarder, amature photographer, and age-group triathlete, having finished 5 Ironman triathlons.  

Dr. Leonard is a board-certified Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, completing his residency and fellowship at the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.  He served as Chief Resident at Bascom Palmer before joining Texas Retina Associates in 1998.  Dr. Leonard joined the Dean McGee Eye Institute in 2001 and has risen to the academic rank of Clinical Professor and Director of the Vitreo-retinal Surgery Fellowship Program during his 17 years on faculty. 

 

Dr. Leonard has been involved in the pivotal anti-VEGF trials
that changed the way we treat wet macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions.  He has been involved in over 30 clinical trials, written chapters in several textbooks and published numerous original articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Leonard's interests include treatment of vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery which include macular hole surgery, retinal detachment repair, membrane peeling of macular puckers, treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions
